MODULE COURSES

5 ECTS. Course gives better understanding of general principles of intercultural communication in Europe and describes the main issues of its development in European countries. It provides an opportunity to familiarize Ukrainian students with the fundamental principles and the main aspects of European Studies of Intercultural Communication. Also this course gives a comprehension of principles and conceptions of dialogue between European countries. The received knowledge and skills are useful for participation in international projects, European educational programmes, building the cooperation with European partners.

Topic 1. Intercultural communication: an agenda for Europe
What is intercultural communication: main definitions? The priorities of the European Agenda on Intercultural communication. The aims of intercultural communication in Europe. The ways of realizing the intercultural communication in Europe.

Topic 2. Intercultural Communication: main concepts
The main concepts of inter-cultural communication; multidisciplinary approach. The “dialogue” and the “monologue” as dimensions of culture. Main models of communication in culture. Anthropological approach to intercultural relations. The methodology of studying the intercultural communication.

Topic 3. Strategies of intercultural communication in European societies
European perspectives on intercultural communication. Intercultural communication as political strategy. Strategies for understanding between European societies. Intercultural communication and process of building the European identity. Strategy on external cultural relations.

Topic 4. Cultural factors of communication in modern societies
The main tendencies in development of modern societies. Cultural diversity of European societies and communication. Cultural barriers of communication in modern European societies. Factors that impact cross-cultural communication in modern societies.

Topic 5. The modernization of communication in Europe
Europe in Secular times. The modernization in Europe. The changes of social imaginaries. Formation of modern social communications in Europe. Transformation of public space as a space of communication. Communication between innovation and tradition is a cultural dimension.

Topic 6. Intercultural communication in times of new media
The phenomenon of new media. The influence of new media on the modern culture of European societies. New media in the post-truth era. Communicative capabilities and communicative distortions of new media. Media and Cultural Stereotyping.

Topic 7. Building the intercultural communication: cases of European countries
Models of creating intercultural communication in European countries. Case of France. Case of Germany. Case of the Benelux countries. The case of post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Topic 8. Intercultural Communication Competences
Main ways of constructing intercultural communication competences. European studies: main principles. The competence approaches in modern education. Multidisciplinary programs in communication studies.

Topic 9. Communication of cultures and cultures of communication
Mass media in modern societies. The development of communication in European culture. The principles of communication of cultures. Global media and European cultural context.

Topic 10. Europe as communicative community
Communicative philosophy. The main models of EU. Solving conflicts between European societies.
5 ECTS. Course gives strong understanding for Ukrainian students about multi-disciplinary field of research in studying of EU’s intercultural communication issues. We’ll pay attention to the EU’s culture strategy, the realization of European values in communication and dialogue between societies. Teaching this course addresses issues of politics of multiculturalism, global migration and intercultural communication. Teachers will also try to model the biggest threats to the European space of intercultural dialogue. Also some topics will be dedicated to the conflicts of values in modern Europe. The received knowledge and skills are useful for effective analysis of current situation in EU’s societies and global world, overcoming conflicts in multicultural societies, building the dialogues in modern societies.

European wars and conflicts. War Reconciliation and Civil Society. Toward peaceful space in Europe. Ethical principles of communication between European nations. Post-Conflict Justice and Reconciliation in Europe. Russian aggression in Ukraine: lessons to Europe.

Topic 2. Politics of Multiculturalism
The concept of multiculturalism. Main models of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism and political philosophy. Pluralism and citizenship in EU. Ethnic relations in European countries. European perspectives of political multiculturalism.

Topic 3. Global migration and intercultural communication in Europe
The European migrant crisis. Exploring migration causes. European Agenda on Migration. The identity of migrants. Migration and cultural communication. EU's migration policy. The communicative issues of migration in Europe.

Topic 4. Dialogue between Religions in Europe
Intercultural versus Interreligious Dialogue. Оvercoming religious stereotypes in Europe. Parliament dialogue with religions in Europe. Religious communications in modern Europe. Religious communication and the process of secularization. Religious tolerance as the main communicative strategy of European societies. European examples of Interfaith Dialogue.

Topic 5. Intercultural aspects of European High Education European university as model of intercultural communication
Diversity in higher education. Cultural education in conflict-affected societies. Principles of cultural studies. Intercultural competence development in higher education. Promoting the principles of intercultural communication for students.

Topic 6. Intercultural Matters and Media in Contemporary EU
The state of development of modern media in Europe. Principles of communication in modern media. Culture issues in modern European media. Are cultural wars taking place today and how do the media react to them? Media and promotion of intercultural communication.

Topic 7. The EU’s external strategy for culture
The potential of culture and creativity for sustainable social and economic development. Promoting peace through intercultural dialogue. Strengthening cooperation on cultural heritage.

Topic 8. Problem of cultural identity in aspect of communication
European identity and national identities: how to reconcile them with each other? Communicative aspect of modern identity. Formation of identity as communication with the Other. Communicative aspect of European identity.

Topic 9. European values and its representation in communication
Are there European values? How they are transformed during globalization. Actualizing the European values in communication. Universality of European values. European values in communication between West and East.
5 ECTS. Course gives better understanding of process of building the relations between Ukraine and EU in aspect of intercultural communication. It describes the main issues of EU and Ukraine relations and cooperation. We’ll pay the attention to the cooperation between Ukrainians official institutions and institutions of EU. Some topics will be dedicated to analysing the political EU-Ukraine communication, Russian aggression and models of dialogue, platforms for EU-Ukraine dialogue, European studies in Ukraine. This course has an aim to give for students the clear understanding of the modern situation in EU and Ukraine. The learning of this course gives a knowledges and skills concerning an effective activity in sphere of public policy and civil society, a communication with authorities, an implementation of success experience of democratic development and political institutions’ modernization.

The phenomenon of intercultural polylogue. European intercultural polylogue. Dialogue between European regions as a basis for development. Polylogue of European values. Intercultural communication in Europe in the aspect of polylogue of cultures.

Topic 3. Political communications between Ukraine and the EU
Principles of political communication. Political communication in the context of intercultural dialogue. Political communication on Ukraine's integration. European support for Ukraine. Communication on the modernization of Ukrainian society

Topic 4. Intercultural dialogue in Ukraine
Ukraine as a space of cultural diversity. Philosophy of dialogue - the basic ideas, principles, moral principles. Ukrainian idea of dialogue between cultures. European principles of dialogue and Ukraine. Formation of a dialogical attitude to the Other as the basis for the formation of society.

Topic 5. Tolerance and intercultural communication in Ukraine and the EU
The phenomenon of tolerance: philosophical aspects. Tolerance as the basis of intercultural dialogue in European societies. Formation of tolerant space in Ukraine. Tolerance in Ukrainian society in the conditions of Russian aggression.

Topic 6. Hybrid war in Ukraine: the need for intercultural dialogue
Russian aggression in Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea and Donbas. Intercultural communication as a way to overcome fakes. Intercultural communication and the victim of Russian propaganda. Intercultural dialogue as a means of reconciliation and conflict resolution. Communicative strategies for restoring the integrity of Ukraine.

Topic 7. Egalitarian communication: feminist and gender studies in Ukraine
Social communications on topical issues. Overcoming gender stereotypes. Gender studies in Ukraine. Feminist movements and their politics. Social communications of feminist movements in Ukraine.
